2013 Iowa Hunger Summit

THE IOWA HUNGER SUMMIT is held each year during the World Food Prize's week of events in October at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown. It kicks off the events, preceding the Norman E. Borlaug International Symposium, also known as the "Borlaug Dialogue."  The Iowa Hunger Summit gathers several hundred leaders from across Iowa representing community organizations, business and industry, state and local government, social agencies, churches and religious communities, schools and universities, and other groups that lead or participate in projects to confront hunger.

The Seventh Annual Iowa Hunger Summit took place at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown on October 15, 2013.

Hunger Summit participants packaged meals to feed hungry Iowans at the Iowa Hunger Fight meal packaging event presented by DuPont Pioneer in conjunction with Meals from the Heartland.

Public Film Screening: "A Place at the Table"
Date/Location: Tuesday Oct. 15, 6:00 p.m., Downtown Marriott, Des Moines, Iowa

This powerful film examines hunger in America, telling the stories of Americans who suffer from food insecurity, exploring the economic, social, and cultural implications of hunger in the United States.

The film screening was followed by a discussion panel comprised of individuals who were involved in the making of the film and featured in the film itself.

Interfaith Prayer Service to End World Hunger
Organized by the Diocese of Des Moines
Date/Location: Wednesday Oct. 16, 8:00 p.m., St. Ambrose Cathedral, 607 High Street, Des Moines, Iowa

The world produces enough food to feed everyone, nearly 2,700 calories for each person in the world each day. Yet nearly 1 in 8 people around the world suffers from chronic malnourishment.

In the midst of our bountiful Iowa harvest, the faith communities of Central Iowa gave thanks for these blessings and prayed for the alleviation of world hunger.

Cardinal Peter K.A. Turkson, President, Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Holy See, and leaders of a broad representation of Central Iowa faith communities led this interfaith service.

Those who wish and who are able were encouraged, in a manner in harmony with their faith traditions, to fast from food on a day of their choosing prior to the service. Donations of money and nonperishable food items were accepted during the service to benefit hunger relief efforts.
