2009 Iowa Hunger Summit

The 2009 Iowa Hunger Summit was held on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown Hotel from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The “Hunger Luncheon” featured a keynote address by Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America and remarks by First Lady Mari Culver and Bishop Pates.

In addition to hunger-related sessions hosted by partners including the Harvest Initiative and the Community Food Security Coalition, the USDA held a special listening session seeking ideas to accomplish President Obama’s pledge to end hunger among U.S. children by 2015.

The World Food Prize presents the “Hunger Luncheon,” featuring meals used by Iowa-based organizations in food assistance and hunger-relief efforts.

Results from the 2009 Iowa Hunger Summit

  • Over the year Iowans donated $8.72 Million for the fight against hunger.
  • 15.6 Million pounds of food were distributed.
  • Volunteers spent 451,000 hours helping the cause.
