2010 Iowa Hunger Summit

The Fourth Annual Iowa Hunger Summit took place on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown Hotel from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The “Hunger Luncheon” featured a keynote address by Ambassador Tony Hall, director of the Alliance to End Hunger. The Iowa Hunger Summit also included various panel discussions and breakout sessions.

“Livestock’s Role in Reducing Food Insecurity”
Organized by Elanco and Heifer International 

10:00 a.m.

"Starving for Knowledge: Nutrition, Brain Development, & Education" 
Organized by the Heartland Global Health Consortium 

11:00 a.m.

“Local and Regional Food Systems: 
Countering Food Insecurity in Iowa”
Organized by ISU Extension and the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture 

12:00 p.m.

The World Food Prize presents the “Hunger Luncheon,” featuring meals used by Iowa-based organizations in food assistance and hunger-relief efforts.

1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The afternoon was devoted to breakout sessions and interactive workshops sponsored by groups including Bread for the WorldDes Moines Area Religious CouncilFoods Resource Bank, the Iowa Food Bank Association, and ONE.

 

RESULTS FROM THE 2010 IOWA HUNGER SUMMIT: 

  • Nearly $9.38 MILLION was donated.
  • Over 18.6 MILLION pounds of food were distributed.
  • 540,000 HOURS were volunteered.
