What Can You Contribute to Ending Hunger in Iowa?

As a followup to the morning presentations, this panel will offer examples of actions by disparate groups toward the goal of ending hunger in Iowa. Ostrom will address advocacy, Miner will elaborate on the variety of constituencies in the INDY Network and Leeds will speak to ways the agricultural industry is and could be more involved in achieving the goal of ending hunger in Iowa. Rice will moderate a Q&A to follow.

About Rev. Sarai Schuncker Rice:

Sarai Schnucker Rice is the Executive Director of the Des Moines Area Religious Council and a congregational consultant, formerly with the Alban Institute.  She specializes in strategic planning, staffing, and governance issues.  Sarai is a graduate of Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman University) and Yale Divinity School.  Prior to beginning her work with DMARC, Rev. Rice served as an Interim Presbytery Executive for the Presbyteries of the Twin Cities Area and North Central Iowa.  She has also taught at Memphis Theological Seminary (Cumberland Presbyterian) in Memphis, Tennessee, served as a co-pastor at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames, IA, and was the Executive Director of Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa.  

About Ms. Kristin Ostrom:

Kristin Ostrom has led advocacy and organizing strategies on poverty and immigration at the federal, state and local levels for over 25 years.  She began her career in Washington, D.C. lobbying on poverty issues, directing the Lutheran church’s first national public policy strategy, More Than Charity, and the organization’s 17 State Public Policy Offices. 

In Nebraska, Ostrom served as Executive Director of the Nebraska Justice Center, a 24 county mediation center, and led strategies for Voices for Children in Nebraska and the American Civil Liberties Union – Nebraska.  She has extensive experience working in coalition, earned media experience and has authored reports including Nebraska Kids Count and Poverty Despite Work, co-authored with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. 

Kristin earned her law degree from Creighton University School of Law and is a Master Mediator under the Nebraska Supreme Court.

Currently, Kristin Ostrom is Regional Organizer with Bread for the World working in Iowa, the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas.  Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.  

About Mr. Kirk Leeds:

Mr. Kirk Leeds is the CEO of the Iowa Soybean Association.

About Mr. Dave Miner:

Dave received a BS in Chemistry in 1974 and a Ph.D. in 1979 from Purdue University. At Eli Lilly and Co. he held a series of management roles in Product Development, Regulatory Affairs, Project Management, and Quality Assurance. He retired in 2008 from Lilly’s animal health division, Elanco. Dave serves as President of a broad collaboration of the major food assistance providers in the Indianapolis area called the Indy Hunger Network. They have a near term goal of building a sustainable system to provide enough food for all who need it. Dave leads local activities of Bread for the World in Indiana and chaired the national Board of Directors for six years. He serves on the boards of the Alliance to End Hunger, Bread for the World, Interfaith Hunger Initiative and Kids Against Hunger-Greenwood.
