<p>Young leaders from Kingsley-Pierson FFA, MMCRU Royals and Sioux City Community School District gathered together to tackle global challenges at the 3rd Annual Northwest Iowa Youth Institute at Western Iowa Tech Community College. </p>

           <p>Throughout the day students applied various scientific methods to real-world issues facing people around the world and packaged over 10,000 meals for <a alt="http://www.thenfeedjustone.org/" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&q=http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t%3Dp8zqfm7ab.0.0.89rtkqcab.0%26id%3Dpreview%26r%3D3%26p%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.thenfeedjustone.org%252F&source=gmail&ust=1530204548981000&usg=AFQjCNHH7wuUt9g_dmOkmOkvNX443cWpPw" href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=p8zqfm7ab.0.0.89rtkqcab.0&id=preview&r=3&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thenfeedjustone.org%2F" shape="rect" target="_blank">Then Feed Just One</a> programs in Honduras!</p>

           <p>Later in the day students heard from the Executive Director of <a alt="https://selfhelpinternational.org/" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&q=http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t%3Dp8zqfm7ab.0.0.89rtkqcab.0%26id%3Dpreview%26r%3D3%26p%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fselfhelpinternational.org%252F&source=gmail&ust=1530204548981000&usg=AFQjCNGXECoIhqAAwrnXqRiivZcpjRfORw" href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=p8zqfm7ab.0.0.89rtkqcab.0&id=preview&r=3&p=https%3A%2F%2Fselfhelpinternational.org%2F" shape="rect" target="_blank">Self Help International</a>, Nora Tobin, and further engaged in a case study activity that connected school feeding programs in the United States with those constructed in Bangladesh. With this activity students were encouraged to find similarities between the programs in both countries.</p>

<p>At the Northeast Iowa Youth Institute students were introduced to hunger-fighting career paths in technology, agriculture, international business, veterinary medicine and more through interactive activities with Hawkeye faculty. They also had the opportunity to partner with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in assembling over 2,000 nutritious backpack kits that were distributed across their 16 county service area.</p>

<p><strong>What is the Iowa Youth Institute?</strong></p>

<p>The Iowa Youth Institute is a life-changing experience at Iowa State University where high school students engage with local leaders and experts on critical global food security challenges, participate in hands-on science activities, and explore exciting ways to make a difference in Iowa and around the world. Students research issues they care about, and propose their ideas to solve these grand challenges.</p>

<p><strong>Why Participate?</strong></p>

                           <li>Earn a $500 scholarship and become eligible for future scholarship opportunities to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences</li>
                           <li>Become recognized as a Borlaug Scholar</li>
                           <li>Qualify for the Global Youth Institute, paid USDA fellowships, and International Internships</li>

                                   <p>Afternoon Breakout Sessions at the Iowa Hunger Summit provide an opportunity for attendees of the Iowa Hunger Summit to engage in in-depth conversations and offers practical tools for getting further involved in ending local and global food insecurity. </p>

<p>The 2018 Iowa Hunger Summit will take place on<strong> Monday, October 15</strong>.</p>

                                   Attendees of the Summit include representatives from community organizations, social agencies, state and local government, churches and religious communities, schools and universities, and community members looking for ways to be further involved in their communities.<br />

<p><strong><span style="color:#8B4513;">INTRODUCING OUR GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER INTERN</span></strong></p>

<p>My name is Annie Edelman, and I'm a George Washington Carver Intern. I will be working under Madeline's guidance, and hopefully learning the essential professional skills needed to succeed in the workplace. I'm currently a junior at Iowa State University studying journalism and mass communications and minoring in English.</p>

<p>While Working at the World Food Prize, I will be helping put together the hard copy of the Iowa hunger directory, as well as supporting the planning and organization of our upcoming Iowa Hunger Summit.</p>

<p>I was lucky enough to have received a George Washington Carver scholarship to attend Iowa State, and now feel even more lucky after receiving this wonderful opportunity to be a George Washington Carver intern at the World Food Prize. Carver made amazing breakthroughs, both in fighting world hunger and diversity, being the first African-American student to attend Iowa State. To get both a scholarship and internship in his name is a great privilege and something I feel honored to be able to say.</p>

<p>With this internship, I hope to gain the necessary leadership skills, professional skills and professional connections needed to succeed in my career. I feel extremely blessed and excited to be here, and I hope to learn everything the World Food Prize has to offer me.</p>
