AARP Iowa State Director Kent Sovern will deliver an engaging presentation on the geography of hunger and health in Iowa, with a particular emphasis on the challenges of senior hunger and the role that older Iowans are playing in combating hunger across Iowa.

About Mr. Kent Sovern:

Kent Sovern is AARP Iowa State Director, responsible for leading and managing Iowa staff and volunteer operations for the national association with more than 375,000 members in Iowa.  Before joining AARP in 2011, Sovern served as President of the New Iowa Group and Executive Director of the Iowa Parks Foundation.  He organized the Iowa Parks Foundation in 2008 with Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and former Congressman Neal Smith.  

Prior to the Iowa Parks Foundation, Sovern was Executive Director of the Des Moines Higher Education Collaborative, a position he moved to after 10 years with the Greater Des Moines Partnership as Senior Vice President of Government and International Relations. Sovern’s other career posts include former Director of Public Policy for the League of Iowa Municipalities, Legislative Liaison with the Iowa Department of Employment Services, and Director of K-12 programming for Iowa Public Television.  

A native of Fort Madison, Iowa, and a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War, he has a Master’s degree from Iowa State University and a Bachelor’s from Culver Stockton College.  Sovern is also a former elementary school teacher and school administrator who has received regional and national recognition for innovative best practices in teaching.  He is married and lives in Des Moines.
