Women Advancing Africa: A Conversation with Sister Marie Nakitende

Sister Marie Nakitende is very much a "hands on" development voice.  She has done many things, and now is working with youth that, due to poverty and lack of hope for a future, have dropped out of school.  She works to get them back in school and teach them entrepreneurial skills to give them a shot at a better life.

She will speak to the cultural issues in Eastern Africa that keep women from developing their full potential, and/or about programs there to combat hunger, including the CRS Farmer to Farmer Program, which gives Iowans something they can do to use their skills to advance development in Eastern Africa.

About Sister Marie Nakatinde:

Born and raised in the village of Makenke in Kampala, Sr. Marie is a member of the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi Institute, founded in Uganda. She received her B.S. from Alverno College, and an MBA and Doctorate in Education Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University before returning to Uganda in January 2013.

Sister Marie knows first-hand the struggles of young women in Africa, the importance of education to create change , and works now in Uganda with young women inspiring them to change their own life trajectory.  As an ambassador for Catholic Relief Services, Sister Marie will share her insights as well as opportunities for action.

About Ms. Teresa Dunbar:

Teresa Dunbar is a hunger fighter from the Midwest.  Raised on an Illinois farm, a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University, Teresa worked in Agribusiness  in Marketing and Consulting for over 20 years before taking her interest in poverty and hunger full-time with Catholic Relief Services as a relationship manager in the Midwest.

Teresa will share more about the Farmer to Farmer program and where organizations like CRS can use your expertise to enhance their fight against hunger.
