Hunger and Aging Iowans – Awareness and Action

This session will review findings from the Iowa AARP hunger survey and recent hunger and older adults strategic planning summit; discuss the impact of food insecurity on older adults’ health and functionality, and collectively identify potential partners to take action on goals contained in strategic plan.

About Ms. Ann Black:

In collaboration with state and national AARP colleagues and volunteers, Ann leads Iowa state office communications efforts to help advance the Association’s national and state initiatives, build strategic alliances, and support state volunteer engagement and member relevance. A former reporter for the Dallas Morning News, Ann has served as communications director since the state office opened in 2001. Since 2011, Ann has been involved in helping lead Iowa’s AARP Foundation Drive to End Hunger grant activities to increase SNAP enrollment and awareness of hunger among older Iowans.

About Ms. Carlene Russell:

Carlene is a registered and licensed dietitian with expertise in nutrition for older adults. She is the Nutrition Program Director at the Iowa Department on Aging where she manages the Older American Act nutrition program and health promotion programs. She has been very active in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has held leadership positions on district, state and national levels. Carlene has published materials and given numerous presentations on nutrition topics for older adults.

About Ms. Linda Gobberdeiel:

Linda Gobberdiel, MA RD LD is consultant for the AARP Foundation-funded Iowa State Hunger Grant project.  She is owner and President of Food and You, LLC managing local and regional food system projects and providing individual counseling regarding food and health. Linda is also Food Systems Coordinator for Eat Greater Des Moines currently housed within the Des Moines Area Religious Council.  In this position she collaborates with organizations, networks, and community leaders to build and develop the food system in central Iowa.   Previous work in the Des Moines area includes Executive Director of 1000 Friends of Iowa, Associate Director of the Wellness Council of Iowa, and Director of Montessori Children’s House.  Linda holds a B.A. Degree in Medical Dietetics, and an M.A. in Management.  She is an avid gardener, marathon runner, and triathlete.  Originally from St. Louis, her and her husband moved to Des Moines over 26 years ago.
