Hunger Relief Partnerships in Rural and Urban Iowa

Hunger Relief in Rural and Urban Iowa

Hosted by: Iowa Food Bank Association  |  United Way of Story County

Subject of Breakout: Food Banking | Rural/Urban Hunger

Summary:

This session will go over the various roles agencies play in the fight against hunger in both rural and urban communities. The Iowa Food Bank Association will review the scope of the hunger issue in Iowa, how food banks operate to alleviate the need, and how other organizations can partner with them. Additionally, United Way of Story County will discuss the Story County Hunger Collaboration, which was developed in 2011 in response to the results of a recent community health needs assessment. The Hunger Collaboration brings together a diverse group of organizations to develop solutions to hunger throughout the county. Those solutions have included summer food service programs for children, senior nutrition, gleaning, and developing awareness around local, rural hunger.

About the Organizations:

Iowa Food Bank Association

The mission of the Iowa Food Bank Association is to support the Feeding America food banks and their affiliates serving Iowa in their work to ensure that sufficient food is accessible to all.

United Way of Story County

The Story County Hunger Collaboration was developed in 2011. The reason it was developed was because of a community health needs assessment that identified hunger as an issue in Story County. So the collaboration itself is not a needs assessment.
