Subject of Breakout
: Food Rescue/Recovery  Technology / Innovation  Wasted Food

Summary:
In the U.S., we currently waste approximately 63 million tons of food annually, constituting 40 percent of all the food we produce. In addition to squandering natural resources and costing an estimated $218 billion every year, the dramatic scale of food that goes uneaten is particularly alarming given that millions of people across the country continue to struggle with food insecurity.

Moderated by ReFED, this session will explore opportunities to use food recovery as a means of providing wholesome, nutritious food to help alleviate hunger, while simultaneously achieving a range of social, environmental, and economic benefits associated with reducing wasted food.

The session will emphasize food recovery opportunities and challenges that exist in Iowa, and will feature panel discussion exploring the potential for innovation, investment, and sound public policy to accelerate the successful implementation of recovery solutions on the national and local levels.
