Description:

The Meskwaki Food Sovereignty Initiative (MFSI) is the umbrella name for all the local and traditional foods initiatives on the Settlement. The main focuses are on education and outreach around food system control and the development of sustainable local farms and farmers. Meskwaki Food Sovereignty Initiative is a community based organization rooted in indigenous land stewardship practices and in the knowledge that food is medicine. Goals include: to establish equitable & healthy food systems on tribal lands, to empower & revitalize Meskwaki ancestral food ways and to grow & steward an edible landscape with an emphasis on traditional foods and medicines. MFSI manages three garden spaces currently: Elder's garden, Youth Garden and Kinship garden. These gardens are the key spaces for outreach and education.
