Description:

The Wallace Centers of Iowa provides a variety of programs to build awareness of local food, sustainable agriculture and civility. the WCI serves both urban and rural communities with locations at the Henry A. Wallace Country Life Center in rural Orient and the Wallace House in Des Moines.

The WCI has several programs related to hunger and food issues:

Farm to Table Thursdays - locally sourced dining that demonstrates sustainable farming, small field production and food from scratch cooking.

Kid's Cooking Classes - Kids learn the basics of knives, recipe reading, choosing healthy ingredients, grocery store label reading and preparing meals.

One Step at a Time - Adding value to garden produce is done in terms of educating people about creating, testing, process, packaging and marketing new food products.

Mickle Center Shared Use Community Kitchen is administered by the WCI. Through working with the kitchen supervisor food entrepreneurs can rent the commercial kitchen to do catering, meal prep and shelf ready products. All excess food from that goes to a Des Moines shelter.

Garden for Good - The Wallace Centers grows 5,000 pounds of sweet potatoes through staff and volunteer work to be donated to area food banks.
