Food Recovery: How Food Waste Undermines Food Security
According to the most recent Feeding America reporting, 1 in 8 Iowans struggle with food security. This, matched with the understanding that 40% of the food produced in the United States is wasted, has led to a cross-sector understanding that food waste undermines food security in our communities.
Through a cross-sector panel discussion focused on food waste and recovery, we will explore the positive economic and community based outcomes that have been the result of partnerships made through the comprehensive collaboration required to recover and redistribute food. As our panelists each take on different roles in the undertaking of food recovery, this panel will host varying perspectives that will collectively highlight their organizations innovative approaches, provide insight into collaboration with other community partners and the outcomes they have procured since embarking on a path towards zero hunger and zero waste.
The panel line-up will include Aubrey Alvarez, Executive Director and Founder of Eat Greater DSM, Derek Nelson, Director of Sustainability at Kum & Go, Denise Osterhues at the Kroger Company, and Lea Hensel, Communications and Marketing Coordinator for the Iowa Waste Reduction Center, as Moderator.
