This past summer the Iowa Food Bank Association (IFBA) welcomed Regenea A. Hurte as their new Executive Director. Previously the Public Benefits Attorney at the Virginia Poverty Law Center and Director of Virginia Hunger Solutions in Richmond, Virginia, Hurte relocated to Iowa and has continued working towards giving a voice to those who are often overlooked.

In conjunction with her responsibilities as Executive Director of the Iowa Food Bank Association, Hurte has also accepted the role of Executive Director for the new statewide initiative, the Iowa Hunger Coalition (IHC).

"Hunger is a primal, foundational issue that impacts every facet of life in Iowa. The success of our education system, strength of our workforce and economy, quality of life and health, and strengthening our communities are all positively impacted when individuals have quality access to nutritious, balanced meals" said Hurte.

ABOUT

The Iowa Hunger Coalition is a permanent advocacy group that connects individuals and organizations across the state of Iowa with a shared dedication to promote effective education, advocacy and policies to end hunger in Iowa. Members come from food banks, food pantries, food rescue organizations, community partnerships, and their own personal commitments to the cause. Their goal is to use their collective voice to educate and advocate on behalf of Iowans struggling with hunger.

In the winter of 2016, representatives of more than a dozen different anti-hunger organizations gathered to create a more effective voice for anti-hunger advocacy in Iowa. These hunger fighters worked together to create a coalition of like-minded organizations and individuals who will work for effective policies and help educate Iowans on the causes, effects, and solutions of food insecurity and hunger in Iowa.

The Iowa Hunger Coalition is a registered 501(c)(4) non-profit.

2018 LEGISLATIVE SESSION

IHC has set two policy priorities for the 2018 legislative session. The first is to educate and advocate on behalf of maintaining SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and its positive impact on the economy. The second is to enhance state tax laws to match federal tax laws for food donations and include hunger-fighting organizations in the sales tax exemption.

MEMBERSHIP
IHC is a membership based organization. Although the members use different tactics to accomplish their goals, their mission is shared. IHC will allow members to leverage their large networks and supporters to provide greater support for relevant legislative and other governmental efforts. Through this the IHC will work to develop and implement effective anti-hunger policies in Iowa.
